As it turns out thru one of my CCW students who also went to UM, I ended up the Faculty/Staff advisor for the University of Miami’s S2A Club. This is a Second Amendment club at U run BY Students.

For those not in the know, UM is not a particularly conservative place, but such can be said for just about any college or university campus in this day and age. It was a difficult process, but successful in the end.

But this is about Daniel Shaw of Shaw Strategies, https://shawstrategies.com/. As it turns out Daniel was a film student at UM. A former Marine and firearms instructor Daniel Shaw has been a DOD/USMC firearms instructor for over 16 years.  Daniel is a pretty damn cool guy, very laid back, easy to talk to…and VERY knowledgeable about what he teaches. I’ve been to a few classes and I’ve was pleasantly surprised. I love to train and believe that just about every instructor has something to add to teach me to add to my own toolbox/skill-set.

So this class, Handgun Vitals, was actually put together by my S2A students for the students. Being the faculty/staff advisor has its perks as I got myself and a friend in to it too!

This was a single day’s class that was held at the fabulous Homestead Training Center in Homestead Florida. https://shoothtc.com/ . If you have not heard of this place and you live in South Florida, you’ve been under a rock. The only 500 yard range in the SoFla area.

Daniel runs a tight class, and we got the usual beginners part out of the way fairly quickly. As the majority of student were NOT originally shooters this was a particularly necessary portion of the class. And Mr. Shaw quickly showed his expertise in getting everyone tracking and hitting the targets. As an instructor myself I know how hard this can be, especially with so many newbies. He did it smoothly and quickly.

He did it so well that our worst shooter, who’d only ever shot a gun in his home country once, ended up being the overall winner of our final shoot-out competition! This was a kid whose first target looked like a shotgun test pattern! Now that is teaching.

Not going to get into the nitty gritty of what he taught us that day, as I will leave that up to you to decide if you take his course. I will say that his training made me WANT to train with him again. Another class, Carbine Vitals, was planned and scheduled in the HTC but unfortunately, a death in Daniel’s family and his leaving the area made that an impossibility.

So look him up and get yourself a class scheduled. You will not regret it.
